SERVICES

VETERINARY SERVICES IN PORTLAND, OR

Examinations
We can make exam appointments for any concerns. We appreciate you scheduling an appointment in advance.  We are only able to provide care for dogs and cats.
We also offer technician appointments for services that do not need a doctor's exam.

Parking
We have a small parking lot located off Broadway.  To reach it, please take the first driveway on your right past our building.  It can be difficult to navigate, so if you have an extra-large vehicle, you may want to utilize street parking.  Please do not park in the lot next to our building on the corner of 24th as that lot does not belong to us and you may be towed.

Vaccinations

We use Merial and Zoetis brand vaccines. We follow the manufacturer guidelines, as well as AAHA and AAFP recommendations in regards to vaccine schedules.  We also take into account the individual lifestyle of your pet when deciding on how often to vaccinate and which vaccines are necessary.
Doctor Doing Operation - Animal and Pet Surgery in Portland OR
Surgery
We take every effort to provide safe anesthesia. We recommend that all patients undergoing any surgical procedure have their blood tested prior to surgery so that we can foresee any possible complications. We use sevoflurane gas anesthesia and patients are monitored while under anesthesia both visibly and with similar monitoring devices as used in human hospitals. That being said, we are able to perform a wide range of surgical procedures at our clinic. Some example surgeries are: spay and neuter of cats and dogs, thyroidectomy, growth removal and biopsy, bladder stone removal, laceration, abscess and wound repair, anal gland(s) removal, exploratory surgery, splenectomy, etc.  We also offer laser surgery as an option which uses a laser instead of a scalpel.  This type of surgery reduces bleeding, infection, and reduces healing time.

Dentistry
We do most of our dental procedures while our patients are under general anesthesia. Anesthesia provides three important functions: immobilization in order to clean below the gum line, pain control, and the ability to place a tube into the windpipe, so bacterial products do not enter the respiratory system. We clean the teeth using a sonic cleaning system similar to what is used in human medicine. Using our digital dental x-ray machine, we are able to determine if any teeth are compromised by infection, breakage or decay. If we find teeth that are compromised, we remove them. We take dental care very seriously as dental disease is one of the leading causes of health problems in animals. Bacteria at the root level of a tooth can enter your pet's blood stream and cause damage to the kidneys, liver and heart.  At this time, we are booking six months out for dental procedures.

Companion Therapy Laser
Laser Therapy is a surgery free, drug free, noninvasive way to help reduce pain and inflammation as well as speed the healing process. We use it to help wounds and surgery sites heal faster and have had great success in treating arthritis as well as acute pain and inflammation from various injuries. We offer laser treatments in single treatments and in packages for those animals with chronic issues. To learn more about the Therapy Laser you can visit: www.companiontherapy.com.
Diagnostics
We are equipped to do the following diagnostic procedures in-house: digital radiographs, blood work (basic chemistries, CBC, and electrolytes), fecal analysis, urinalysis, skin and ear cytology, and feline leukemia/feline aids test. If your pet requires an ultrasound, we can schedule one to be done at our clinic through Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Consultants mobile service and Internist Dr. Naidoo mobile service.
Nutritional and Behavioral Counseling

We have a variety of prescription veterinary diets for various medical conditions. Whether your pet has kidney disease, an allergic skin condition, is overweight, or has a tendency to form crystals in their urine, we can help you create a diet plan to keep your pet in prime health.

If you pet is demonstrating behavioral problems such as: separation anxiety, aggression, inappropriate urination, or fear, we can help. We offer Feliway, Adaptil, and NurtureCalm phermone products, and our veterinarians are knowledgeable in behavior modification techniques. If needed, we can offer prescription medications and diets to make your pet more comfortable and at ease. If the behavioral problem is one that we cannot get under control, we recommend the services of Christopher Pachel, DVM, DACVB at the animal behavior clinic and Valli Parthasarathy, PhD, DVM at Synergy Behavior Solutions.

Microchipping
A HomeAgain microchip is permanent pet ID. It is an ISO standard-compatible, 134.2 kHz microchip with patented Bio-Bond™ anti-migration technology. The microchip itself has no internal energy source, so it will last the life of your pet. It is read by passing a microchip scanner over the pet's shoulder blades. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that provides the power necessary to transmit the microchips unique cat or dog ID code and positively identify the pet. HomeAgain is the only dog & cat microchipping product on the market today that has the Bio-Bond patented anti-migration feature to help ensure that the microchip will stay in place so that it may be easily located and scanned. If your pet gets lost and is taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian, they will scan the microchip to read its unique dog or cat ID code. This is the number used by HomeAgain to identify your pet and retrieve your contact information, which is used to contact you and reunite you with your pet. Dog and cat microchipping is a simple procedure. The process is similar to a routine shot, takes only a few seconds, and your pet will not react any more than he would to a vaccination. Microchips registered with HomeAgain remain in their database for life, but it is the valuable annual membership benefits that prevent pet recovery from being a "once and done," soon forgotten component of pet care. HomeAgain will send you annual renewal notices as well as other regular reminders to keep your contact information current, and you can update your profile at any time during the membership year, not just at renewal.

Compassionate Euthanasia
Euthanasia is the hardest decision a pet owner has to make. We are here to help you and your family through this tough process. We schedule euthanasia appointments to accommodate you.

You have the choice of taking your deceased pet home with you or, we have cremation options available through Family Animal Services Inc.  We are not able to offer home euthanasia at this time, but please see our resource page for a list of veterinarians who are able to provide that service.

Technician appointments
If your pet requires services that do not involve a veterinarian such as: a recheck blood draw, nail trim, or anal gland expression, you have the option of scheduling a technician appointment. We will try to get you in and out as quick as possible.

Drop off and Emergency Services
We realize that sometimes it is difficult to arrange a specific appointment time when your pet needs immediate care. For this situation, we provide the option of your pet with us in the morning. Our doctors will then examine your pet, call you back with diagnostic and treatment options as well as price estimates. We will then call you when your pet is ready to go home.  Availability for this service is limited.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency situation, please call us to let us know the circumstances and if we are the best option for the needed care.  We recommend having our phone number programmed into your cell phone so that you can have a passenger call us on your way.  A call in advance allows us to have everything ready to treat your pet's emergency when you arrive. In some cases where we are not able to provide the care, diagnostics or treatments necessary for your pet, we will strive to stabilize your pet so you can transfer them to a specialty emergency hospital.

We recommend BluePearl Emergency Pet Hospital or DoveLewis Animal Emergency Hospital for after hour emergency care. All the local emergency hospitals are listed on our Resources page. For more information, please contact our office at 503-282-0380.
